Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. placed on IL for first time in career

Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to lower back tightness. This move marks the first time in his five-year professional career that he has missed time on the injured list.

Witt, 26, is currently batting .279 with 13 home runs, 39 RBIs, and an American League-leading 30 stolen bases. He recently participated in his third consecutive All-Star Game. The shortstop stated that his physical condition prevented him from performing at his standard level, forcing him to step away to allow for recovery.

The roster adjustment was made retroactive to Tuesday. In a related move to add depth, the Royals recalled infielder Andrew Velazquez from Triple-A Omaha. Additionally, the team transferred right-hander Stephen Kolek to the 60-day injured list to accommodate the changes.

Separately, the organization bolstered its pitching staff by acquiring right-handed reliever Nate Pearson from the Houston Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Max Martin. Pearson arrives in Kansas City with a 3.60 ERA across 16 appearances this season. The team continues to navigate these roster shifts while maintaining their position as the season progresses through late July.
