Team before glory: Cam K's 12 Phillies after bowing out of All-Star Game
Cam Schlittler made a statement on the mound in Philadelphia on Friday night. After missing out on the opportunity to pitch in the All-Star Game earlier this month, the Yankees right-hander returned to Citizens Bank Park and delivered a dominant performance. He struck out 12 batters over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to lead his team to a 1-0 victory over the Phillies.
Schlittler allowed just three hits and one hit batter throughout the evening. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and relied on a heavy mix of fastballs that reached up to 99.7 mph. While he expressed some frustration about not pitching during the All-Star festivities, he treated this game as his chance to prove his capability on the field.
Paul Goldschmidt provided the only run of the contest with a fourth-inning home run against Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo. This win moves Schlittler into elite territory as one of the few American League pitchers with double-digit victories this season. He continues to hold the league lead in ERA at 2.07.
Following the game, Schlittler credited the challenge of facing a tough Phillies lineup. He exited in the eighth inning with two runners on base, and teammate Brent Headrick secured the win with help from defensive plays by Jasson Domínguez and Cody Bellinger. Manager Aaron Boone noted that after a difficult first at-bat, Schlittler maintained control throughout the rest of the start.
