The Boston Red Sox are making a significant move to bolster their roster before the trade deadline. The team is acquiring catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles in a multi-player deal. In return for the former No. 1 overall pick, the Orioles will receive a package of five players. This group includes right-handed pitching prospect Anthony Eyanson, who is currently ranked as Boston's second-best prospect. Baltimore also adds catcher Carlos Narváez, right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar, and a player to be named later.
Rutschman brings star power to the Red Sox lineup. Despite dealing with several injuries this season, including time on the injured list for a wrist issue, he has produced solid numbers when on the field. The 28-year-old is hitting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs over 67 games. His defensive skills behind the plate remain a primary asset, with a 37.2% caught-stealing rate.
The Orioles selected Rutschman first overall in the 2019 MLB Draft. He served as the anchor for the team's rebuild under Mike Elias and reached the major leagues in 2022. He remains under team control through the 2027 season, making this a long-term addition for the Red Sox. The club expects him to begin a rehab assignment soon as he recovers from wrist inflammation, with a return to play projected for mid-August.
