Atlanta Hawks dump former No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher after disappointing two-year stint

The Atlanta Hawks are moving on from Zaccharie Risacher after only two seasons. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft is heading to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a three-team trade involving the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Risacher failed to live up to the expectations that come with a top draft selection. After a rookie year where he averaged 12.6 points, his production dipped to 9.6 points in his second season. Unlike other top picks who were traded due to injury, the Hawks made this move for purely basketball-related reasons. Atlanta management decided that his trajectory no longer fit their needs, opting to acquire Lu Dort from the Thunder instead.

This departure is rare for a recent top pick. Players selected at the top of the draft are typically given more time to develop, yet the Hawks chose to cut ties after 142 games. This trade leaves Risacher in the company of other high-profile draft picks who struggled to find their footing in their initial landing spots.

As part of the same deal, the Mavericks also added guard Ryan Nembhard. The Oklahoma City Thunder will receive two second-round picks in exchange for their involvement in the trade. For the Hawks, the focus now shifts to how Lu Dort fits into their rotation. The move highlights the pressure on front offices to pivot quickly when a cornerstone player fails to deliver on high-level potential.
