Beard adds international flair to his coaching staff
Ole Miss basketball has added a significant piece to its coaching staff with the hiring of Peter Aleksic. The 57-year-old brings an extensive background in European professional basketball to Oxford after a long career as both a player and a head coach.
Head coach Chris Beard noted his familiarity with Aleksic, citing a nine-week period spent together in Europe and the coach's previous involvement with the Rebels during their Sweet 16 run. Aleksic has spent years coaching in Switzerland, Austria, and Greece, and he brings a wealth of experience from his recent work in the West Asia Super League.
Aleksic earned Swiss Coach of the Year honors multiple times, including back-to-back awards in 2021 and 2023. His professional history includes leading the Swiss national team to a victory over Russia during EuroBasket qualification in 2015. Known for an approach that mixes old-school discipline with modern player development, he arrives in Mississippi as the team prepares for exhibition games in Puerto Rico.
Beard emphasized that the hiring focus remains on finding coaches who can reach the roster and maximize player output. With a track record of building teams focused on defensive intensity and chemistry, Aleksic is expected to provide a new perspective for the Ole Miss program as they prepare for the upcoming season.
