Tennessee's Arion Carter suspended 2 games over $427 flight
Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter will miss the first two games of the upcoming college football season. The NCAA issued a two-game suspension after an investigation revealed Carter accepted a flight valued at $427 from an agent during the period he declared for the NFL draft.
Carter, a senior, returned to the program after dealing with a foot injury and undergoing surgery during the offseason. According to school records, the athlete repaid the cost of the flight in January and cut ties with the agent once he decided to remain at the university.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel expressed strong disagreement with the NCAA ruling. Heupel noted that Carter acted in the interest of his medical recovery and physical well-being. He emphasized that the student-athlete remains a high-character leader who is on track to graduate with honors in August.
The suspension means Carter will sit out the home opener against Furman on September 5 and the road game at Georgia Tech on September 12. He is scheduled to return to the lineup for the September 19 matchup against Kennesaw State.
Despite the absence of a veteran defender, Tennessee remains deep at the linebacker position. The coaching staff has built depth through recent transfer arrivals and the emergence of freshman All-American Edwin Spillman. The team continues training camp preparations this week.
