Report: Michigan AD Warde Manuel to get $7M in departure deal
University of Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel is set to receive a lump sum of $7.14 million as part of his departure agreement from the school. This financial arrangement follows the announcement on July 20 that the university would buy out the remaining three years on his contract. Manuel will officially step down from his position on December 31, 2026.
The decision comes after internal investigations into the athletic department and questions regarding the conduct of former football coach Sherrone Moore. The agreement states that Manuel will remain with the university until his resignation date at the end of the year. His personnel record will reflect a formal resignation.
Beyond the $7.14 million payment, the terms include a $108,000 contribution to his retirement account and $82,000 to cover his legal fees. Manuel retains specific perks, including access to university athletic event tickets and golf privileges. He is barred from taking an athletic director or senior advisory role at any other Big Ten institution for two years following his departure.
This separation concludes a tenure marked by administrative scrutiny. Manuel is free to pursue opportunities outside the Big Ten conference without penalty.
