Suvanto spent last season playing for Tappara in Liiga, the top professional league in Finland. He recorded 11 points in 48 games, the highest total for any player age 17 or younger in that league. His performance caught the attention of scouts, and Washington Assistant General Manager Ross Mahoney views him as a future second-line center. The Capitals have focused on building a large, physical team, and Suvanto fits this organizational direction.
While Suvanto is currently under contract with Tappara for another season, his time at the Capitals’ development camp provided a look at the intensity required to succeed in North America. He credits his size for his current success in physical battles and plans to increase his strength before transitioning to the NHL rink. He has identified established Capitals forwards as examples for his own development.
