Merida joins Alcaraz & Sinner in Umag title history

Daniel Merida made history in Croatia this weekend. The 21-year-old Spaniard captured his first ATP Tour title by winning the Plava Laguna Croatia Open in Umag. This victory places him in elite company as the third-youngest champion in the history of the tournament. He now sits on a list that includes Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Merida finished his week with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory against 34-year-old Damir Dzumhur.

The final lasted nearly two hours. Merida controlled the opening set quickly, finishing it in just 28 minutes. Dzumhur managed to break back and force a deciding third set after a tight second, but Merida regained control to finish the match. This win marks a significant step for the Madrid native. He entered the week having only played in seven tour-level events prior to this tournament.

This breakthrough result moves Merida up to No. 58 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. He will reach a new career high in the rankings this coming Monday. The win also marks him as the eighth player to earn his first ATP Tour title during the 2026 season.
