Relentless Rublev sinks Darderi to reclaim Bastad crown

Andrey Rublev secured his second title at the Nordea Open in Bastad this Sunday. The world number 16 defeated defending champion Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-3 in a final that lasted 77 minutes. This victory marks a significant milestone for Rublev, as it ends a nearly 17-month title drought since his win in Doha in February 2025.

Conditions during the final were challenging for both competitors. Rublev noted the cold and heavy air, which differed from the earlier sunny weather in the tournament. Despite the weather, he managed to dominate the court. After a tight start at 4-4 in the first set, Rublev reeled off five consecutive games to seize control of the match. He successfully saved a break point early in the second set to maintain his advantage.

Statistically, the performance was sharp. Rublev won 87 percent of his points behind his first serve throughout the match. This win improves his head-to-head record against Darderi to 2-0. The result also snaps a five-match losing streak for Rublev against top-20 opponents. With this trophy, he moves up to number 14 in the latest world rankings.

Rublev previously won this event in 2023. His ability to reclaim the crown in Sweden demonstrates his comfort on the clay courts in Bastad. He remains focused on his momentum as he looks ahead to the remainder of the season.
