WNBA to launch replay center in 2027: What we know about the facility and how it will impact officiating woes

The WNBA is taking a major step to improve game officiating. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that a centralized replay center will launch at the start of the 2027 season. This facility, located in Secaucus, New Jersey, is the same one used by the NBA and features 94 high-definition monitors to assist with game reviews.

Currently, officials rely on limited camera angles and local arena setups, which has contributed to ongoing frustration regarding consistency. By connecting all WNBA arenas directly to this central hub, the league expects a faster and more efficient review process. When a play is challenged or requires an automatic review, footage will be transmitted instantly to personnel who can identify the clearest angles for the officiating crew on the floor.

This project represents a significant financial investment in the league's basketball operations. While some teams share arenas with NBA clubs that already possess the necessary infrastructure, others will need upgrades during the upcoming offseasons to ensure compatibility with the new system. The league is currently finalizing these operational requirements to meet the 2027 target.

Officiating remains a primary focus for the league following years of criticism from coaches and players. Commissioner Engelbert noted that while scoring and pace are at record highs, the league continues to prioritize referee development. An eight-person task force is already at work addressing consistency and physicality concerns. Though a formal two-minute report similar to the NBA model is not on the immediate horizon, this new replay center signals a clear commitment to modernizing the game experience.
