WNBPA's Nneka Ogwumike says union, league rebuilding trust

Nneka Ogwumike, president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association, addressed the current climate surrounding the league during the recent All-Star break. Following a 90-minute meeting with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Ogwumike emphasized the necessity of rebuilding trust between the players and league leadership.

The discussions primarily focused on the surge of hateful and abusive messages directed at players, including reports of racial slurs and threats. Ogwumike noted that the meeting was a direct request from the WNBPA executive and JEDI committees to ensure league officials grasp the severity of these issues.

While the WNBA previously launched the No Space For Hate platform to curb online harassment, players are now calling for greater accountability and proactive measures. Ogwumike stated that the players expect league leadership to stay ahead of the league's rapid growth rather than reacting to issues after they become chronic.

Looking toward the future, Ogwumike expressed a sense of hope following the exchange. She noted that while she does not dictate the commissioner's tenure, the players remain committed to working with whoever holds the role. The priority remains the safety and protection of the athletes as the league continues to expand.
