President Donald Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Plan aims to ensure AI firms cover their own infrastructure costs. This policy protects residential customers from bearing the financial burden of increased data demand.

Evidence suggests data centers may even lower electricity rates for nearby residents in some markets. Because electric utilities carry heavy fixed costs, adding a massive customer like a data center allows those expenses to spread across a larger base. In Ellendale, customers saw their electric bills drop by $250 annually following the arrival of a data center. Misinformation regarding water usage is also widespread. While some early reports claimed high water consumption, most modern data centers now use closed-loop cooling systems that effectively eliminate water waste in daily operations.
