AMD launches Helios, its first rack AI system to rival Nvidia, adding Microsoft as newest buyer
Advanced Micro Devices is officially shipping its first rack-scale AI system, named Helios. This hardware represents a major step in the company's long-term plan to compete with Nvidia in the data center market. Microsoft is the latest enterprise to join a growing list of adopters that includes Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle. With shipping slated to begin later this year, the system is designed to power large-scale model inference and complex AI applications.
Helios integrates GPUs, CPUs, networking, and software into a single unit. Data center head Forrest Norrod highlights the system’s focus on performance and total cost of ownership as the primary goals. AMD aims to provide a competitive alternative for firms that need massive computing capacity for their internal research and model development. The system features 18 compute trays, each equipped with four Instinct GPUs and a single EPYC processor.
While Nvidia currently holds a significant lead in the data center GPU market, analysts believe AMD has a path to capture 20% to 25% of the sector through these rack-scale offerings. The development of Helios is the result of years of acquisitions, including Pensando, Xilinx, and ZT Systems, alongside the company's progress with its open-source software ecosystem.
Microsoft intends to use these systems to support its Azure infrastructure portfolio and its internal AI projects. Beyond the hardware, the shift toward AMD infrastructure reflects a broader industry desire for more options in the high-performance computing space. As companies race to secure enough compute power for agentic AI and data pipelines, AMD is positioned to play a much larger role in the landscape than it has in the recent past.
