Construction sites in Texas and Nevada currently feature excavators operating without anyone in the cab. Bedrock Robotics is deploying these autonomous machines on commercial earthwork projects. While autonomous software has long been a staple of digital office tasks, seeing a heavy machine perform site work without a human operator marks a shift in how infrastructure projects function.
Bedrock claims these deployments followed a year of testing on active sites under human supervision. The company now reports its systems are achieving productivity levels nearing those of human operators. This transition is arriving as construction firms face significant labor shortages, with industry estimates suggesting nearly half of the current workforce could reach retirement age within five years.
Technology and Field Implementation
The Bedrock Operator system serves as a retrofit package for existing heavy machinery. It combines sensor arrays and computing units that allow a machine to monitor its surroundings, plan movement, and execute complex digging tasks. Installation takes roughly one day and does not require permanent changes to the excavator. Once the site manager uploads a plan, the machine handles the earthmoving process independently.
Safety remains a core component of this rollout. The machines operate with constant monitoring, though the company states that human intervention is infrequent. If an excavator encounters an object or person within its proximity, it automatically halts movement until the path is clear. This feature allows for operations in active zones where other heavy equipment and crews move about.
The Role of Skilled Operators
Bedrock positions this technology as a tool for support rather than a replacement for labor. Because excavators make up a quarter of many contractors' fleets and require years of training to master, the firm believes automation handles the most repetitive production tasks. This shift allows existing operators to take on more complex, detailed work or transition into supervisory roles where they manage fleets of machines.
Contractors currently struggle to fill craft positions, with research indicating that over 90% of firms face difficulty finding enough help. By moving the burden of repetitive cut-and-fill operations to machines, companies may be able to stay closer to project timelines. McKinsey analysis shows that large-scale infrastructure projects often exceed their budgets and schedules, providing a strong economic incentive for this shift.
Future Coordination and Scaling
The company is scaling its deployments while exploring how multiple machines can communicate. Future iterations of the system aim to coordinate excavators with bulldozers, trucks, and graders to streamline the entire site workflow. Instead of machines acting as isolated tools, the goal is for a connected fleet to execute larger project phases with minimal friction.
While this vision is on the horizon, the focus remains on the current stage of scaling excavator operations. The industry will watch closely to see if this near-human productivity remains consistent as the number of active sites grows.
