Chinese engineers showcased advancements in robotics at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing this Saturday. The event, held at the National Speed Skating Oval, brought together thousands of machines to compete in activities ranging from soccer to high jump. The venue served as the site for the 2022 Winter Olympics and now hosts a different kind of athlete. Organizers confirmed that over 2,000 humanoid robots arrived to participate in the five-day exhibition of machine capability.

The competition highlights the ongoing industry race between international powers. China currently leads global production in the sector. Recent trade tensions have led to scrutiny from external regulators. Last month, the United States Federal Communications Commission moved to ban imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, citing national security concerns. The Pentagon has also placed several Chinese robot makers, including Unitree, on lists related to military ties. Beijing officials maintain that these restrictions are baseless and hinder technical progress.

Record-Breaking Performance in Beijing

Several robots set new performance standards during the opening day. A machine from the Beijing-based firm X-Humanoid completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds. This result surpasses the human world record of 9.58 seconds, established by Usain Bolt in 2009. Another robot from the same company recorded a standing high jump of 2.88 meters. This mark clears the long-standing human world record of 2.45 meters set by Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

Trial runs prior to the opening ceremony produced even faster results. A robot manufactured by the smartphone company Honor clocked a 100-meter dash in 9.32 seconds. These machines exhibit peak speeds reaching 14.5 meters per second. Such numbers suggest a significant leap in the mechanical efficiency and control systems present in modern humanoid designs compared to previous iterations.

Market Realities and Future Outlook

Spectators at the event expressed mixed reactions to the speed of these developments. While some attendees noted excitement over the technical display, others acknowledged the lingering unease regarding automation. One local resident, Li Yanfeng, shared that her initial resistance to artificial intelligence changed as she observed the rapid shifts in the sector. She viewed the progress as an unstoppable trend.

Experts caution against assuming that these machines are ready for general labor. Most of the robots appearing at the Beijing games focus on performance, research, and technical exhibition.
