Meta has initiated a remote shutdown of video and photo capabilities on its smart glasses for users who deliberately tampered with the device hardware. The company confirmed the move on Tuesday, citing concerns over users modifying their spectacles to disable indicator lights that signal when a recording is active. While Meta did not disclose the precise number of affected units, reports indicate the action targets thousands of individual devices.

Alex Himel, vice president of wearables at Meta, stated that the company estimates less than one-tenth of a percent of all glasses sold have undergone unauthorized modifications. Given that seven million units were sold throughout 2025, the number of deactivated devices likely remains under 7,000. These users had physically altered the hardware to bypass privacy safeguards, which had triggered significant public pushback.
Public disapproval reached a peak as reports surfaced of individuals using the glasses to record others without consent. These incidents often involved targeting women and girls in public spaces or school environments.
