A new report from LinkedIn offers a clear look at the current state of the labor market for young workers. While broader economic data shows that Gen Z and recent college graduates face unemployment rates significantly higher than the national average, a specific sector provides a different outcome. Young workers are securing positions in the artificial intelligence industry at a rate that defies broader trends.
Data indicates that Gen Z now holds more than two-thirds of roles for forward-deployed engineers and AI engineers. These positions command median annual salaries of $199,000 and $166,000 respectively. Meanwhile, millennials represent 60% of new hires for leadership roles classified as Head of AI, which carry a median salary of $236,000. These figures stand in contrast to the median annual salary for workers aged 25 to 34, which sits near $60,320.
Education remains the primary barrier to entry for these high-paying roles. Roughly 91% of workers in AI-related positions hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. For senior leadership roles, that requirement often shifts to graduate or doctoral degrees. LinkedIn analysts note that the rapid increase in available capital within the sector has forced organizations to inflate compensation packages to attract specialized talent, further distancing these roles from typical market wages.
Despite the growth, the data highlights a persistent disparity in representation. Women account for only 26% of new hires in AI roles, compared to a 50% split in other occupations. This gap becomes more pronounced at the top of the organizational structure, where women hold a small fraction of director and technical leadership positions. The only area of parity is in data annotation, which also serves as the lowest-paid category among AI-related jobs.

While many young professionals express concern regarding whether automation will replace their roles, the current data suggests that those with technical expertise can find significant opportunities by positioning themselves at the center of this industry expansion.
