The district initially approved a $60,000 purchase from Realbotix, aiming to give high school students hands-on experience with robotics and technology. Proponents suggested the robot could assist with teaching tasks or answer basic questions for students learning to code.
Opposition grew rapidly after community members discovered links between the manufacturer and another company known for producing hyper-realistic robotic models often associated with the adult industry. While both the district and Realbotix maintained that the companies operate as separate entities with distinct management teams, the association caused widespread discomfort among local educators and families.
Labor leaders were particularly vocal, with the New York State United Teachers union arguing that schools require human interaction rather than hardware. The union stated that students need relationships with teachers, not a machine. State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa also questioned the role of such technology, noting that early descriptions of the device as a tutoring platform prompted further scrutiny regarding data privacy and the nature of the classroom environment.
For now, the district has halted the pilot program. Officials are working to address state requirements for student data privacy and are continuing to seek feedback from the community. The manufacturer, Realbotix, has clarified that the educational units are newly built for school use, insisting they collect no data beyond what the district permits.
