New York school district to deploy humanoid robot in classrooms this fall

The Salamanca City Central School District in New York is taking a step into the future this fall. Starting in the upcoming semester, a humanoid robot named Sally will join classrooms to assist with instruction. This project is a partnership between the district and the technology firm Realbotix, aiming to integrate artificial intelligence into the standard STEM curriculum.

Superintendent Mark Beehler rejects the approach of banning new technology in schools. Instead, he believes in teaching students how to interact with these tools responsibly. The robot is not intended to replace human teachers. It is designed as a support resource that provides personalized learning experiences based on individual student history. Students will access the system through unique identification numbers to work on class material using their laptops.

Sally features silicone skin and long hair, and she is capable of various facial expressions and upper-body movements. The robot can remember past interactions, allowing it to pick up where a lesson left off. Company leadership emphasizes that the robot operates under strict district and teacher oversight. They maintain that the company does not have access to student data, ensuring privacy protections remain in place while providing students with hands-on experience in coding and robotics.

This pilot program represents a push to prepare students for a workforce where artificial intelligence and robotics are increasingly common. Rather than avoiding these changes, the district is providing students with a direct way to gain experience before they graduate. It remains one of the first implementations of its kind in a public school setting.
