OpenAI has announced a new initiative to provide 100,000 academic researchers with free access to its frontier AI models. This program aims to put advanced computational tools directly into the hands of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers at qualified institutions by 2027. The project starts with 10,000 researchers this summer, with early participation from organizations like the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure.
Participants will gain access to specialized models including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. These tools support a wide range of scientific tasks, from genomic analysis and protein modeling to grant writing and literature reviews. The workspaces are built with business-grade security, ensuring that researcher data is not used to train future iterations of the models. By providing this access, the company aims to support researchers in pursuing their own scientific questions without dictating the direction of their work.
This move is part of a larger $250 million commitment to support external scientific research through 2027. The program includes hands-on training and technical support to assist researchers in integrating these tools into their specific workflows. By lowering the barrier to entry for high-level computing, the initiative seeks to help professionals tackle complex problems more efficiently.
Researchers interested in the program must be affiliated with recognized, degree-granting colleges or universities that demonstrate high research activity. Each participant can invite up to four collaborators from their institution to join their workspace. This collaboration feature is intended to support team-based discovery across various scientific disciplines.
