Boca Raton is establishing itself as a specialized hub for quantum computing. D-Wave Quantum recently opened a research facility in the city, supported by a $500,000 municipal incentive package and the addition of 100 high-wage technical roles.
Florida Atlantic University is preparing for this shift by acquiring a $20 million commercial quantum computer, which will arrive on campus in 2027. This move makes the institution the first in the state to host such technology. Meanwhile, Palm Beach State College is launching a training laboratory focused on preparing technicians to maintain and calibrate these complex systems.
Infrastructure is also expanding to connect the region. A new 1,500-mile fiber optic network managed by Florida LambdaRail and IonQ is under construction. This project spans across Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward counties to support cross-regional research.
Local leaders are prioritizing applied research and workforce development. By leveraging existing regional strengths in aerospace, logistics, and life sciences, the area aims to integrate quantum tools into industry operations. The strategy focuses on sustainable growth rather than mimicking traditional tech markets.
