Eaton is partnering with Infleqtion to explore how quantum computing can harden the United States electrical grid against outages. This project is part of a program funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory, focusing on contingency analysis for complex power systems.

Grid reliability requires evaluating thousands of potential failure scenarios for transmission lines and generators. Modern classical computers often struggle to process these interdependencies at high speed, leading to approximate results that fail to capture the full scope of potential risks. By using neutral-atom quantum hardware, the research team aims to model these scenarios with greater speed and accuracy.

Infleqtion brings specialized knowledge in quantum algorithms and error correction to the collaboration. The work will focus on combinatorial optimization, which is central to maintaining stable power distribution during equipment failures. This effort aims to reduce the likelihood of cascading blackouts and improve overall infrastructure preparedness.

This initiative aligns with national goals to modernize critical energy systems.
