Notre Dame launches Data, AI, and Computing Initiative to unify emerging technology research, education, and academic services
The University of Notre Dame has launched its new Data, AI, and Computing Initiative to coordinate research and education across all campus departments. This initiative aligns with the school’s 2033 strategic framework by unifying diverse academic units, including the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and the Scientific AI Initiative, into one structure.
Nitesh Chawla serves as director for the project, which aims to position the university as a leader in emerging technologies while maintaining a focus on responsible, inclusive, safe, and empowering principles. A new unit, the Deployment, Operations, Modeling, and Engineering group, will provide technical support to data and AI researchers, ensuring they have the computing resources needed to advance their work.
Education remains a priority for the program as it integrates data and computational approaches into both undergraduate and graduate curricula. Recent discussions with industry leaders highlight a growing demand for graduates who possess technical fluency paired with adaptability and ethical judgment. In response, the Mendoza College of Business is launching an undergraduate minor in AI Analytics in Business this fall.
Beyond the classroom, the initiative supports research working groups that look at AI applications in fields such as social science, health, and the humanities. These groups focus on using technology to address issues like sustainability, poverty, and healthcare access. By bringing together experts from various disciplines, the university intends to ensure that technological advancements align with broader societal goals and its own historical traditions.
