Motorola Launches New Smartwatch with High-Brightness Display

Motorola has officially entered the high-end wearables category with the global release of the Moto Watch Ultra. The device features a 1.5-inch pOLED display capable of hitting 2,700 nits of peak brightness. It arrives running Wear OS 6. This move marks a strategic shift for Motorola, as it abandons the real-time operating systems found in its previous budget-focused watches like the Watch Fit and Watch 120.

Under the hood, the device relies on the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chipset paired with 2 GB of RAM. Users get 32 GB of internal storage for apps and media. A 550 mAh battery powers the unit, which Motorola claims will provide two days of operation when always-on display settings are turned off. The display itself uses a variable refresh rate ranging from 1 Hz to 60 Hz to manage energy consumption.

Advanced Features and Connectivity

Motorola has prioritized athletic utility by integrating dual-frequency GPS. This feature is intended for precise tracking during outdoor workouts and navigation. The watch also includes eSIM functionality, allowing for cellular connectivity without needing a nearby smartphone. Protecting the screen is Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a standard choice for durability in modern wearables.

Software capabilities are bolstered by a partnership with Polar. The watch includes specific tools like an Activity Goal monitor, Active Intensity Zone tracking, and a dedicated Running Coach. These additions suggest that Motorola intends to compete directly with established fitness-first brands like Garmin or the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra line. The software suite also includes features such as energy source monitoring and inactivity alerts.

Market Availability and Pricing

Motorola confirmed the new smartwatch will be available in the coming weeks across the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Pricing in the Eurozone is set at 429 Euros. In the United States, the retail price is expected to be 349 Dollars, with the product already appearing on the company's local website. The watch launches in four distinct finishes: Black Beauty, Mountain View, and Nuthatch, though the availability of these specific colors may vary by region.

This release accompanies the launch of the Edge 70 Plus smartphone and a refresh of the Razr 70 foldable. By leveraging the Ultra branding, Motorola is signaling a direct challenge to premium market incumbents. Industry observers should watch to see if this hardware package manages to gain significant traction against entrenched rivals in the competitive wearable sector.
