The Pixel Watch 5 could be perfect if Google just fixes one major flaw
The evolution of the smartwatch has spanned over a decade, yet users are still stuck in a cycle of proprietary charging systems. With every few generations, companies introduce new hardware that renders older accessories useless, creating unnecessary waste and costs for consumers. Google is currently repeating this pattern with its Pixel Watch series, which has cycled through several different charging methods in just four iterations.
The current Pixel Watch 4 utilizes a proprietary dock that retails for $30. While this system supports faster charging, it lacks versatility. Owners are often forced to purchase multiple units for work, travel, or backups, as these proprietary pins do not work with standard equipment. Because Google changes these systems so frequently, third-party accessory makers are reluctant to invest in the ecosystem, leaving consumers with limited, expensive, or unreliable options.
The upcoming Pixel Watch 5 launch provides a chance for a pivot. Adopting the Qi2 wireless charging standard would solve many of these issues. Qi2 is an open standard that allows for universal compatibility, meaning users could potentially charge their watches on the same pads used for phones or other devices. Even if Google keeps its proprietary pins for speed, providing Qi2 as a secondary option would ensure users are never stranded if they misplace their official charger.
This shift is necessary for the broader Android ecosystem. If major players like Google lead the transition to universal standards, it encourages other manufacturers to follow suit. This would move the market away from a fragmented landscape toward one where accessories are cheaper, more available, and functional across different devices. As we wait for the official release, the inclusion of a universal charging standard remains the single most impactful update Google could implement to improve the daily experience of its users.
