Apple, Google, and Samsung are signaling the end of the line for several popular smartwatch models in 2026. This transition marks a critical point for owners who have invested hundreds of dollars in hardware that remains physically functional. While the devices continue to tick, the cessation of software updates shifts how these wearables interact with modern digital ecosystems. Users must now distinguish between the loss of major operating system features and the termination of vital security patches.

Apple’s transition to watchOS 27 officially drops support for the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, the second-generation SE, and the original Ultra. This move impacts a wide range of devices released as recently as four years ago. The Series 8, for instance, introduced advanced health tools like temperature sensing and Crash Detection, yet it now faces obsolescence in the eyes of Apple’s software roadmap. The current supported roster now shifts entirely to the Series 9 and newer, alongside the Ultra 2 and 3 iterations.

Hardware Capabilities and Feature Expansion

Technological progress in the wearable market is aggressive, with manufacturers packing newer models with more demanding requirements. Apple is folding Apple Intelligence-powered Siri features into its latest software, while Google focuses on Gemini-based proactive health tracking for its Pixel Watch line. These advancements rely on newer processing power and sensor arrays that legacy watches lack. The hardware gap is becoming an unavoidable barrier for companies trying to unify their user experience across their latest devices.

Google maintains a tighter support schedule for its hardware. The Pixel Watch 2, which launched in October 2023, is nearing the end of its promised software support period this October. Compared to the seven-year support windows Google offers for some of its smartphones, this compressed timeline highlights a stark difference in how the company prioritizes its wearable portfolio. Despite the short lifespan, the device brought significant upgrades like the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chip and improved battery management, setting a performance baseline that its successors continue to build upon.

Managing the Transition and Device Longevity

Samsung is also finalizing support for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro. These models reach the end of their guaranteed major Wear OS upgrades by December 31, 2026. Owners should note that an end to major feature updates does not immediately translate to a total lack of security support. Samsung historically extends security patching for a duration after the main feature cycle concludes. This distinction provides a reprieve for users who do not require the latest software gimmicks or deep software integration.

Still, the threat landscape for connected wearables is real. Once security updates cease, vulnerabilities remain exposed, potentially allowing unauthorized access through connected smartphones.
