Once deployed, these units must reach an altitude of approximately 600 kilometers to effectively beam high-speed data to ground users. Current tracking data from astronomer Jonathan McDowell indicates that only 299 of Amazon's 396 satellites have successfully reached these operational orbits. A significant portion of the fleet remains in a transition phase, either ascending or descending into their proper positions.

Protocols for satellite management often require extensive preliminary testing once they reach their target location. This process is not unique to Amazon; SpaceX’s Starlink network also experiences a delay of several months as each unit undergoes orbital raising. McDowell estimates that the majority of Amazon's current fleet will settle into place by November 2026, though some units may take longer to align with the active network requirements.

Competitive Landscape and Future Scaling

Amazon’s current constellation size remains modest when contrasted with industry leader Starlink, which manages a fleet of roughly 10,000 satellites. Satellite industry analyst Carlos Placido suggests that when Leo eventually opens to the public, it will likely offer service only in specific latitudes. This limitation stems from the current density of the satellite network, which is not yet sufficient for widespread global coverage.

The initial plan for the Leo constellation involves a total of 3,232 satellites. Even after achieving this first-generation goal, Amazon acknowledges the system will not initially cover polar regions. Operational Next Steps

Amazon has not provided a firm date for the start of commercial operations. Internal efforts focus on shipping additional batches of satellites to launch sites, including locations in French Guiana for upcoming Arianespace missions. Simultaneously, the company is coordinating with United Launch Alliance to utilize Vulcan Centaur heavy-lift rockets for future deployment windows.

While consumers await public availability, pricing remains a point of speculation. Amazon has indicated that its subscription costs will aim to be competitive with established players in the market.
