Amazon Leo satellite internet takes on Starlink
Amazon is closing the gap in the space internet race. The company recently launched 29 additional satellites into low Earth orbit, bringing its total active fleet to 396 units. This milestone moves the project closer to an initial service rollout scheduled for later this year. While these satellites still need to reach their final operating positions, the progress represents a key step for the network known as Leo.
Despite this momentum, Starlink maintains a significant advantage. SpaceX began its deployment in 2019 and currently operates a much larger constellation with established service in over 150 markets. Starlink is currently the most viable option for those needing satellite internet connectivity immediately.
Amazon brings different advantages to this contest. The company plans to leverage its massive logistics infrastructure and its AWS cloud division to gain traction. Initial testing will focus on commercial partnerships, including upcoming in-flight Wi-Fi deployments with carriers like JetBlue and Delta. These deals suggest Amazon expects its space network to improve connectivity for travelers as a primary market entry point.
Beyond in-flight service, Amazon intends to move into the direct-to-device phone market. The company’s planned acquisition of Globalstar provides access to the necessary spectrum and infrastructure for this goal. While this technology aims to extend coverage beyond traditional cell towers, it remains in the early stages of development and will likely serve as an emergency backup rather than a primary mobile solution for the time being.
For consumers, this competition is a positive development. As Amazon builds out its capacity, other providers may face pressure to lower prices or improve service reliability. While it remains too early to replace existing home internet connections with Amazon’s service, the entry of a major competitor often drives improvements across the industry.
