Four months ago, bot traffic surpassed human traffic for the first time in history. Projections suggest that bots will double human traffic by the end of this year. Why the Ad-Supported Model Faces Collapse

The current internet business model relies on referral traffic measured by human engagement. Supporting this massive surge in non-human traffic requires significant investment in infrastructure. Data centers must scale to handle the requests even when those requests offer no financial return. This creates an unsustainable paradox for publishers. They must expand their infrastructure to accommodate bot traffic while their primary revenue source, human-driven advertising, faces stagnation or decline. If the current trajectory continues, publishers must either accept lower profit margins or find a way to make bot operators pay for the resources they consume.

Moving Toward a Pay-Per-Crawl Future

Prince suggests a potential transition to a pay-per-crawl model. This approach would require entities deploying AI bots to compensate website owners for the data they access. Cryptocurrency-based micropayments could facilitate these transactions at scale. Such a shift moves the internet from an ad-supported medium to a subscription-based ecosystem. This change carries heavy implications for the broader advertising sector. If hundreds of billions of dollars in performance-based ad spend shift toward subscription micropayments, the entire economic landscape of digital media changes.

Questions about the future of brand influence are already emerging. Google scaled its advertising business on its own terms, often limiting brand influence on search outcomes. Now, the rise of answer engines presents a new challenge. Brands and retailers might eventually find themselves competing directly against the platforms that once hosted their ads. Amazon and Shein have already adopted internal models that combine retail with media platform functionality, echoing early 20th-century catalog retailers like Montgomery Ward.

Media platforms that successfully preserve authentic human interaction will likely increase in value. If the web becomes saturated with AI-generated content and machine-to-machine traffic, direct human engagement will become a scarce commodity. Platforms capable of maintaining this connection will command higher premiums from advertisers.

High-engagement media channels with limited agentic mediation offer a clear path forward for brands. Live events, film, television, and long-form written content provide environments where human presence remains the primary driver. These channels may see an increase in advertising value as the digital web becomes increasingly automated. The shift creates a clear split in the market.
