High-Speed Rail Internet Trials in Poland

PKP Intercity, the state-owned long-distance rail operator in Poland, plans to launch live trials of satellite internet connectivity for passengers. Starting in October, the project will focus on the company's Pendolino high-speed trains. These trains serve as the primary fleet for long-distance routes across the country. Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak announced the initiative on Tuesday, marking a shift toward solving connectivity problems that plague rail travel.

Minister Klimczak stated that if the pilot phase delivers consistent results, the rail operator intends to deploy the technology across its entire network. The goal is to position Poland as a leader in European rail connectivity. Officials believe that constant internet access is necessary for the modern passenger, especially for those who need to work while traveling.

Technology Providers and Testing Scope

Chief Executive Alan Beroud confirmed that the company has already completed internal tests using Starlink. SpaceX operates this low-Earth-orbit satellite network. Now, the project moves to the next phase with passenger involvement. While Starlink remains a primary candidate, PKP Intercity is also evaluating solutions from several other European providers to ensure the most reliable outcome. Beroud did not name these additional firms during his update to the Polish state news agency PAP.

Previous internal tests provided a baseline, but live passenger use introduces more variables. A train car is a difficult environment for wireless signals. High speeds make it hard for traditional cellular networks to maintain a signal as they hand off connections between towers. Satellite systems aim to bridge this gap, although tunnels and dense terrain still pose technical hurdles for the hardware.

Industry Context and Future Outlook

This shift in Poland follows a broader trend across the European rail sector. Operators in Italy, such as Italo, have already moved to integrate Starlink hardware into their fleets. Meanwhile, major operators in the United Kingdom like South Western Railway and ScotRail have conducted similar trials. French operator SNCF has also explored a hybrid approach, attempting to combine satellite bandwidth with terrestrial cellular infrastructure.

Reliable internet on trains is moving from a luxury to a standard expectation. Passenger demand for continuous connectivity has spiked as mobile devices become central to both work and leisure. The technical challenge remains substantial, as maintaining a link while moving at high speeds involves complex hardware and software integration. If the Polish trials prove successful, this move could set a standard for regional rail networks. The wider industry will watch the October rollout closely to see how effectively satellite technology addresses the intermittent connection problems that have historically limited rail travel productivity.

Reliability is the central metric for these upcoming trials. Passengers often find themselves disconnected when trains pass through rural areas or deep tunnels. If satellite systems can mitigate these dropouts, the passenger experience will improve significantly. Success here depends on the ability of the hardware to maintain a handshake with satellites even when the physical path is obstructed.
