Underwater Internet Cables Are Doing Something Unexpected For Endangered Orcas
Researchers at the University of Washington are repurposing underwater internet cables to protect the endangered Southern Resident orcas. By using Distributed Acoustic Sensing, scientists turn fiber-optic lines into massive sensors capable of picking up vibrations in the water. This allows the team to track movements of whales with high precision. Dr. Shima Abadi, the lead oceanographer on the project, explains that this data provides insights into migration patterns that were previously difficult to monitor.
The initiative is vital for the survival of the Southern Resident orca population, which currently sits at just 74 individuals. These whales face threats from pollution, food shortages, and noise interference from maritime traffic. Since orcas rely on echolocation to hunt Chinook salmon, vessel noise creates significant obstacles for them. The acoustic data collected by these cables will help officials adjust ship traffic and construction activity when whales are near, providing a quieter path for the pods.
This project in the Haro Strait demonstrates how existing infrastructure can serve conservation needs. The technology, originally built to detect integrity issues in pipelines, proves effective for monitoring biological activity at high frequencies. If the two-year study yields the expected results, it opens the door to using global subsea cable networks for environmental observation. This shift highlights a practical approach to protecting biodiversity by applying industrial technology to ecological challenges.
