Google Rolls Out Motion Assist for Android Devices
Google has officially introduced Motion Assist, a new feature aimed at curbing motion sickness for people who use their phones while riding in cars, buses, or trains. The feature displays small animated dots or geometric shapes along the perimeter of the screen. These visual cues shift and pulse in synchronization with the vehicle's actual movement. The intent is to reduce the sensory conflict between the user's eyes and their inner ear, a common trigger for nausea while looking at a screen in transit.
Android 17 devices are the first to receive this update. Google Pixel phones are prioritized in the initial rollout, though the feature will reach other Android handsets over the coming months. The software was initially spotted in a beta version of the Android operating system back in December 2024. Its public release marks the end of a long testing period for the company.
Customizing the Experience and Accessibility
Users can find the tool inside the settings menu. Navigating to the Google Play Settings, users select their profile, tap Settings, and find the feature under the Personal and device safety section. Once there, the interface allows for specific adjustments. People can change the color, shape, and opacity of the visual indicators. A randomization mode is also available, which cycles through different settings automatically to keep the visual cues from becoming monotonous.
The system includes automation options. Users can configure the phone to activate Motion Assist as soon as sensors detect the device is inside a moving vehicle. Manual control remains an option as well. A dedicated tile in the Quick Settings menu allows for immediate toggling of the feature. When active, the phone sends a persistent notification that makes it easy to switch the service off at any time.
Industry Context and Future Implications
The move puts Android in direct competition with features already present in other ecosystems. Apple launched its own Vehicle Motion Cues for iPhone users in 2024. This functionality operates on a similar premise of using peripheral screen cues to align visual input with physical motion. Samsung has also introduced related health-monitoring features on its latest Galaxy watches, signaling a broad industry trend toward using wearable and mobile data to address user discomfort.
Technological progress in mobile devices often involves adding sensors that track location, speed, and orientation with high precision. This data is no longer limited to navigation apps. Manufacturers now use this information to adjust how users interact with screens during travel. As long as mobile device usage remains common during commutes, companies will likely continue to search for ways to mitigate the physical side effects of screen exposure. Users should watch for additional device support as the software spreads beyond the initial Pixel-exclusive phase.
