Apple Enters the Foldable Market with iPhone Duo

Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market with the introduction of the iPhone Duo. Unveiled on September 9, 2026, the device features a folding design that serves as a departure from the traditional rigid slab form factor the company has maintained for nearly two decades. When closed, the handset presents a 5.4-inch outer display that functions much like the standard iPhone 18 Pro. Once opened, it transforms into a 7.6-inch inner screen designed for multitasking, content consumption, and gaming. The hinge mechanism utilizes over 100 components to maintain structural stability while providing a flat surface for the display.

Hardware specifications include the A20 Pro chip, which is manufactured on a 2-nanometer process. Apple has integrated a custom vapor chamber directly into the chip package to handle the thermal demands of high-frame-rate gaming and complex AI tasks. Powering the device are two separate high-energy batteries placed on either side of the hinge, allowing for 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen or 44 hours on the outer screen. Apple confirmed that the device will ship with iOS 27, which includes a modified interface that shifts dock controls to the side of the screen to better utilize the available vertical space.

Advanced Imaging and AI Integration

Photography remains a central component of the iPhone Duo, which carries a 48MP Fusion Main camera system. The folding design introduces new software features that capitalize on the dual-display layout. For instance, Smart Take uses on-device AI to analyze a scene and trigger the shutter when subjects are posed correctly. Another feature, Duo Preview, allows subjects to view themselves on the outer display while the photographer uses the main rear cameras. This approach is intended to provide higher image quality for self-portraits compared to standard front-facing sensors.

Apple has also introduced Siri AI, a major update to its voice assistant that relies on Apple Intelligence. This system provides personal context awareness by scanning messages, emails, and photos to provide targeted information. A dedicated Siri app stores conversational history across devices, and the system can now perform actions based on what appears on the user's screen. The company is deploying this in beta with the release of iOS 27, with support for multiple languages and expanded functionality arriving later in 2026.

Availability and Pricing

Apple has set the starting price for the iPhone Duo at $1,999. This entry-level model includes 256GB of storage, with options scaling up to 2TB. The company is positioning the device as a professional-grade tool rather than a mass-market consumer phone. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on October 16, 2026, with the initial launch occurring in over 70 countries and regions on October 23. This global release schedule marks one of the company's most aggressive rollouts for a new hardware form factor.

Durability is addressed through the use of grade 5 titanium and an updated version of Ceramic Shield. The inner display utilizes a custom polymer lamination that Apple claims is 40 percent stiffer than other industry materials. The device also features IP68-rated water and dust resistance, a requirement for high-end smartphones in 2026. As with previous generations, Apple continues to lean into the ecosystem, offering new accessories such as the iPhone Duo Folio and the iPhone Duo Case, which are designed to work with MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging standards.
