Springfield native and systems engineer Blake Doran created a new mobile application called ClearDepth to help boaters and swimmers identify underwater hazards. The app allows users to mark, view, and confirm dangerous obstructions like submerged stumps or rocks that may not be visible from the surface.
Doran developed the tool after the loss of a family friend, aiming to provide a practical resource for lake users to share information about their surroundings. Users can zoom in on map views to see specific hazard locations and read confirmations from other members of the community who have encountered the same obstacles. The app currently covers 200 lakes, with a significant user base across Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
While technology provides a new way to stay informed, local lake enthusiasts emphasize that constant vigilance remains essential. Checking local water conditions and being aware of shallow areas are standard safety practices. The goal for ClearDepth is to add another layer of awareness for those spending time on the water, helping people make safer decisions before they head out.
