A New Shape for the Foldable Lineup

Samsung shifted its design philosophy with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, moving away from the narrow, tall aspect ratio that defined its predecessors. This hardware change makes the device feel more like a traditional tablet when unfolded. The 4:3 inner screen ratio is a departure from the squared-off panels used in earlier models. Many users find this layout superior for media consumption, as it reduces the letterboxing commonly seen when watching widescreen video content.

This shift in physical dimensions invites a different interaction pattern. While previous iterations felt like devices designed strictly for landscape multitasking, the Fold 8 handles vertical tasks with surprising efficiency. Users who previously relied on the narrow cover screen for social feeds or news reading are now finding value in opening the device. Rotating the 7.6-inch display creates a portrait experience that mirrors an iPad mini, providing a genuine sense of utility for daily consumption tasks.

The Design Flaw in the Inner Display

Despite the success of the new aspect ratio, a specific hardware choice disrupts the experience. Samsung placed a 10MP hole-punch selfie camera in the middle of the right side of the main screen. When users rotate the device into the portrait orientation that the new form factor encourages, the cutout ends up floating in a position that obstructs text, photos, and video content.

This choice is particularly strange given that previous Samsung foldables employed under-display camera technology to hide the lens. Even when opting for a visible cutout, competitors like Google and Motorola keep the camera in the top-right corner, where it remains mostly out of the primary viewing area. By placing the lens near the center-right rail, Samsung ensures that the obstruction is front and center during common vertical usage. It forces a visual compromise that negates the advantage of the cleaner, wider display.

Rethinking the Role of Internal Cameras

Modern book-style foldables provide multiple high-quality camera lenses on the rear. Users can easily unfold the device and utilize the cover display to frame selfies with these superior sensors. Because this method yields better image quality and is physically easier to manage, the internal selfie camera sees almost no utility for the average owner. The argument for its existence typically centers on video conferencing, but even there, usage patterns vary wildly.

Samsung removed Flex Mode support in this version, further weakening the case for an internal camera intended for half-open tabletop use. Without the ability to hold a specific angle for calls, the camera occupies space that could serve better purposes. If the lens remains, its location must account for the way people actually hold their devices. Removing the component entirely would allow for a more immersive display or potentially higher-capacity battery components. The industry at large appears locked into including these sensors out of habit, yet the Fold 8 demonstrates that this legacy design choice is increasingly an obstacle to a refined user experience.
