Market Shifts in China

Huawei and Xiaomi released their latest foldable smartphones on Monday. This move forces direct competition within the Chinese premium handset market just days before Apple hosts its own product unveiling. Huawei introduced the Mate XT2 series, a device that unfolds twice to provide a tablet-sized interface. The phone includes a redesigned hinge mechanism and improved water resistance. It also features a specialized privacy screen intended to block outside viewing angles.

Executive Director Richard Yu noted the high production costs during a press conference in Guangzhou. He specifically pointed to rising memory costs as a significant barrier. The device starts at 19,999 yuan, roughly $2,980. The most expensive version retails for 24,999 yuan, or $3,725. Retail sales are scheduled to begin this Saturday.

Technological Developments

Huawei remains the primary player in the tri-fold phone market. The Mate XT2 uses the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which Huawei claims delivers higher computing power while drawing less energy. This architecture, referred to as LogicFolding, follows the Tau Scaling Law principle introduced in May. These design choices represent a push to bypass U.S. sanctions that limit the company's access to external high-end technology.

Xiaomi held a separate event to showcase the Xiaomi 18 Fold. CEO Lei Jun marketed the device as a medium-fold solution that maintains a passport-like size when closed. It supports three applications simultaneously when fully opened. The device weighs less than 8 ounces and measures under a quarter-inch thick. Lei compared these specs directly to the iPhone Pro Max to illustrate the company's hardware progress.

Competitive Landscape

Xiaomi utilized its proprietary XRing O3 AI processor for the 18 Fold. The company claims this chip outperforms Apple’s A19 Pro in responsiveness tests. Additionally, the phone relies on DRAM chips provided by the Chinese firm CXMT. This local supply chain strategy aims to provide value for money in a volatile memory market, with prices starting at 10,999 yuan.

Market data from the second quarter shows Huawei holding a 22.6 percent share of China's smartphone market. Apple currently sits at 18.1 percent, while Xiaomi holds 12.4 percent. Huawei’s dominance is even more pronounced in the foldable segment, where it captured 68 percent of shipments according to Smart Analytics Global. The industry is now waiting to see if Apple introduces its own foldable hardware at its upcoming event. For now, the pressure on domestic market share remains high.
