A Record-Breaking Drop from the Stratosphere

An iPhone 17 Pro successfully survived a drop from 30,607 meters above northern Sweden without the assistance of a parachute. Guinness World Records officially verified the event on August 26, awarding the title of the highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case to the Taiwan-based manufacturer, RhinoShield. The test occurred on June 24 near the Esrange Space Center in Swedish Lapland. A British aerospace firm, Sent Into Space, managed the technical logistics of the high-altitude release.

The drop height is staggering when viewed in context. It reached 100,418 feet, which is three times higher than the altitude flown by a typical commercial airliner and more than three times the height of Mount Everest. The descent lasted roughly 25 minutes after a high-altitude balloon carried the payload into the stratosphere. An altimeter reading triggered the release mechanism, dropping the device into the wilderness below.

Surviving Near-Space Conditions

RhinoShield and Sent Into Space engineers operated under strict parameters during this test. No parachute was allowed, and the rules dictated that the phone case must strike the ground before the device itself. The phone traveled with no heating equipment and no secondary housing, leaving the case exposed to temperatures between minus 40 and minus 60 degrees Celsius. Atmospheric pressure at that altitude is roughly one percent of what is felt at sea level. The research team conducted pre-test freeze and pressure assessments to confirm the equipment would hold up in these conditions.

Finding the device required significant effort in the Swedish wilderness. A helicopter tracked the payload's descent, but ground teams needed five hours to locate the phone after initial signal interference. Once recovered, the device remained in working order. It could power on, initiate calls, and capture images. The exterior showed no signs of failure despite the impact on the tundra. The recovery effort was led by brand experience manager Mujou Hsiao and co-founder Chris Rose.

The Engineering Behind the Protection

The AirX case, used during the test, features a single recyclable material. This design aims to solve the environmental problem posed by standard cases, which often glue multiple plastics and rubbers together in ways that make recycling impossible. RhinoShield designer teams drew inspiration from automotive airbags and athletic footwear to create internal air chambers. These chambers serve to absorb and disperse impact energy before it hits the phone body.

Eric Wang, the company's chief executive, initiated this stunt to test the limits of their sustainable design philosophy. The firm usually runs laboratory drop tests from a standard 1.2 meters, and their own stress testing involves 23-meter drops from their office building. By pushing the limit to 30,000 meters, the company intended to show that mono-material cases are capable of high-level protection. The success of this drop is intended to sway consumer opinion regarding the durability of environmentally friendly materials.
