Ohio residents now possess a new way to handle identification as the state expands its digital ID program to include Google Wallet. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles confirmed on Monday that the mobile ID feature, previously restricted to iPhone users, is now ready for Android devices. This change aims to simplify identity verification across the state, ranging from government buildings to businesses and retail locations.
State officials describe the move as a method to save time and add convenience for residents during their interactions with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Governor Mike DeWine stated that this feature represents another step in modernizing how citizens engage with state services. The digital ID allows users to verify their age or identity at TSA checkpoints, casinos, and various commercial venues that accept state-issued digital credentials.
Security and Privacy Features
Designers of the Ohio Mobile ID program prioritized data protection throughout the development process. The IDs are encrypted directly on the user's mobile device. Personal authentication is required to access the information, which acts as a barrier against unauthorized use. If a user loses their phone, they can delete the digital ID remotely, preventing any potential misuse of their personal details.
Users maintain control over their data through the interface, which lets them review what specific information they share when presenting the ID.
