Competitive Pressures Mount Before Apple Keynote

Chinese smartphone manufacturers Huawei and Xiaomi moved quickly this week to release new foldable hardware ahead of an expected product launch from Apple. Xiaomi introduced the 18 Fold on Monday, positioning the device as a direct competitor to existing foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. Simultaneously, Huawei showcased the Mate XT2, the latest iteration of its trifold technology. These product releases come just before Apple hosts an event this Wednesday where rumors persist about the reveal of a foldable iPhone model.

Industry analysts suggest the timing of these announcements is intentional. Vendors hope to establish their presence in the foldable segment before Apple captures consumer attention with its first entry into the market. Francisco Jeronimo of IDC noted that companies want their current flagship devices available for direct comparison once Apple products hit store shelves. The race indicates the importance of the folding screen market even as it remains a niche compared to standard slab-style smartphones.

Market Projections for the Foldable Segment

Predictions regarding Apple's potential impact on the sector remain high. Counterpoint Research estimates that Apple could ship 6 million units of a foldable iPhone within the remainder of 2026. This volume could grant the company a 25% share of the global foldable market shortly after launch. Analysts expect this figure to potentially reach 40% by 2027 as consumers transition from existing devices to the new format.

Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint Research, highlighted pent-up demand among the existing Apple user base. Many long-time users have waited for an Apple alternative rather than switching to Samsung, the current leader in global foldable adoption. The introduction of such a device creates a clear pathway for these consumers to upgrade without exiting the Apple ecosystem. This strategy aims to solidify brand loyalty while expanding into the high-margin foldable category.

Technological Hurdles and Regional Competition

Designers at both Xiaomi and Huawei emphasize their proprietary hardware to distinguish their products. Xiaomi confirmed the 18 Fold uses the XRing O3, an internal processor built on advanced manufacturing processes. Huawei highlighted its Mate XT2 features a new method for moving electrical signals across a folding screen, which they call LogicFolding. These technical claims serve as marketing points as these companies fight for technological relevance against the potential influx of Apple hardware.

While Samsung dominates the category globally, the landscape in China looks different. Huawei currently holds more than two-thirds of the foldable market within the country. The upcoming competitive shift may force these manufacturers to adjust their marketing as they face a formidable rival in Apple. Demand from affluent Chinese buyers for the latest premium hardware remains a key driver for all three companies. What happens next depends on how well Apple executes its design and whether consumers find the foldable format necessary for their daily tasks.
