Quest 3 Performance Upgrades

Meta has rolled out Horizon OS 2.7, an update that introduces significant display and control changes to the Quest 3 headset. Users can now access higher refresh rates for supported applications. While the hardware previously peaked at 120 Hz, the new software allows for 207 Hz native support. Those with Developer Mode enabled can push the hardware to 240 Hz through specific command line operations.

This higher refresh rate mode requires display scaling technology. The process renders graphics at a lower internal resolution before upscaling them to fill the screen. Because of this trade-off, Meta warns that fine text and thin lines may appear less sharp than they do at native refresh rates. Motion blur characteristics also shift once users cross the 144 Hz threshold. Despite these caveats, tools such as Virtual Desktop and Quest Games Optimizer have already integrated support for the higher settings.

New Controller Emulation

Horizon OS 2.7 adds a Gamepad Emulation feature for the Touch Plus controllers. This allows users to map physical inputs to virtual triggers and buttons, effectively mimicking an Xbox controller. To activate it, users navigate to the controller settings menu within their headset. The system treats the grip button or the thumbrest as a shift key. This allows users to access a full set of gamepad controls despite the limited physical buttons on the standard controllers.

Meta positions this as an alternative for flat-screen gaming. The feature works best with titles that do not require complex, simultaneous inputs. While the company still recommends a physical controller for the best experience, this software update provides a way for users to play games like those on Steam Link without external hardware.

UI Adjustments and Remote Integration

Visibility is a core focus of this update. A new section in the display settings allows users to change the relative size of all windows and interface elements. These controls go beyond text scaling, effectively resizing the entire workspace. At the maximum setting, a single window can occupy as much space as a traditional theater-sized display.

Meta also rebranded its Remote Desktop application as Virtual Display. This update moves the functionality of the standalone HDMI Link app directly into the core software. Users can now mirror screens from various sources without needing multiple utility apps. This merger signifies a move toward keeping the device's feature set consolidated as the software ecosystem matures.

Strategic Context

These changes highlight a continued focus on expanding the utility of existing hardware. Meta’s previous statements indicate no immediate plans for new physical controller hardware, suggesting that software updates will remain the primary method for improving functionality. By refining features like display scaling and gamepad mapping, the company keeps the Quest 3 relevant against newer, emerging hardware. Future updates will likely continue this trend of software-driven performance tuning as the industry prepares for upcoming headset releases.
