Hawaiʻi Governor Josh Green has announced that all public schools, as well as state and county offices on the Big Island, will remain closed this Tuesday. This measure provides essential time for utility crews to restore power and for public works teams to clear hazardous debris from roadways.
Power restoration efforts are ongoing across the island. As of Monday afternoon, approximately 39,730 customers remain without electricity. Hawaiian Electric has deployed internal teams to assess damage and expects about 100 additional crew members from mainland partner utilities to arrive by Tuesday to expedite repairs. Residents in rural areas should anticipate extended outages as these teams work through complex repairs on transmission lines.
Water service is currently restricted to essential needs for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. The Department of Water Supply has positioned potable water tankers in Pāpaʻikou, Pepe‘ekeo, North Kohala, and Nāʻālehu for resident use. A brown water advisory is also in effect, and the Department of Health urges the public to avoid swimming or drinking from freshwater streams and ponds until further notice.
While Hilo International Airport and Kona International Airport have resumed operations, passengers should verify flight status before departure. Court and judiciary facilities in the 3rd Circuit will stay closed on Tuesday, with all hearings and trials scheduled for that day subject to rescheduling. Filings previously due on Tuesday are now extended until August 19.
State parks and forestry lands remain closed to ensure public safety. For ongoing damage reporting, residents can access the official county portal to submit commercial or residential assessments. Please continue to monitor local official channels for specific reopening timelines and updated safety guidance as the recovery process continues.
