Seattle City Council members react to mayor asking SPD Chief Shon Barnes to resign

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has requested the resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes, a move that sparked immediate criticism from several City Council members. The request comes as the city grapples with the aftermath of a deadly mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle event. Council members across several districts expressed their concerns regarding the timing and the potential instability caused by this leadership change during an active public safety crisis.

Several council members described the decision as reckless and irresponsible. Councilmember Maritza Rivera criticized the mayor for an alleged lack of communication and experience, noting that the administration has cycled through four police chiefs in just two and a half years. Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck emphasized the need for better communication between the executive and legislative branches of city government. Downtown Seattle Association President Jon Scholes echoed these sentiments regarding the need for continuity. He noted that crime rates in the downtown core showed recent signs of improvement and stressed that the next police chief must maintain that trajectory. As the city prepares for upcoming events like Seafair, the focus remains on whether the administration can provide the stable leadership required to ensure public safety in a period of transition.
