Families gathered at Bangkok’s Institute of Forensic Medicine this Saturday to reclaim the bodies of their loved ones following a tragic shooting rampage. The incident, which occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district, has now resulted in nine deaths. Among those killed were five staff members, the shooter's grandparents, and the 14-year-old gunman who took his own life after the attack. A 12-year-old girl died from her injuries in the hospital, bringing the final toll to nine lives lost.
Fourteen people remain under medical care as of Saturday. The Ministry of Public Health reports that seven of these individuals are in critical condition. Most of the injured are students aged 12 to 14. Forensic experts confirmed that the victims suffered fatal wounds, and the weapon used by the shooter was a small firearm legally registered to his grandfather.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced plans for new legislation to control firearms. He stated that the proposed law will restrict firearm possession to government officials on duty. This move follows years of public concern regarding high gun ownership rates in the country, where millions of weapons remain in civilian hands.
Local residents and parents visited the school, which is closed for the coming week to allow for recovery and investigation. The atmosphere at the school gate remained somber as the community processed the unexpected nature of the violence. Mourners left flowers and parents retrieved student belongings while investigators continued to process evidence. Officials expect more findings, including toxicology reports, in the near future.
