Wildfires across France and Spain have forced approximately 375,000 people to evacuate their homes and holiday locations. In France alone, nearly 260,000 people have fled the path of the blazes, while 116,000 evacuations have occurred in neighboring Spain. The fires continue to challenge emergency crews, particularly near Bordeaux, where authorities struggle to contain the growth of the smoke and flames.

Tourists caught in the regions describe an apocalyptic atmosphere. Witnesses report skies darkening during the day as thick plumes of smoke blocked out the sun. At Lacanau Océan, ash fell from the sky, covering the beach and prompting many visitors to abandon their holiday plans early. For many travelers, the reality of the situation became clear only after they attempted to navigate transportation networks already strained by the emergency.

Transportation issues added further complications to the evacuation efforts. Tourists reported cancelled trains and emergency alerts that arrived in the middle of the night, forcing families to seek shelter at exhibition centers or depart the country entirely. While some campgrounds remain officially open, authorities have restricted access to many areas, leaving some visitors in a state of limbo regarding their travel plans.

Weather conditions are expected to remain difficult. Forecasters warn of another heatwave arriving mid-week, with temperatures predicted to reach 40C in certain districts.
