Amid U.S.-Iran war, Houthi rebels threaten to blockade another key strait

The Houthis, a militia based in Yemen, have announced a naval blockade of the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait. This decision follows strikes by Saudi Arabia on an airport in Sanaa, where an Iranian official was traveling earlier this month. The strait serves as a critical maritime route that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Saudi Arabia relies on this waterway to export millions of barrels of oil daily. Its strategic importance has increased significantly since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently affected by the ongoing war between the United States and Iran. Analysts suggest that a blockade here would put additional pressure on global energy markets, which are already strained by the current conflict.

This development puts further pressure on Gulf states to manage security risks related to Iran and its regional proxies. Meanwhile, the broader conflict between the United States and Iran continues to intensify. U.S. Central Command reported further strikes against Iranian military command centers, missile sites, and air defense systems. The casualty count in this conflict has risen, with at least 17 U.S. service members killed to date. Military officials acknowledge that hundreds of personnel have sustained injuries during the fighting.

Diplomatic efforts remain stalled as regional tensions escalate. While a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah persists in Lebanon, the wider landscape remains volatile.
