Professor Jason Arday has resigned from his position at the University of Cambridge. This decision comes as the institution launches an investigation into new information regarding his academic qualifications and professional history.
Arday gained public attention in 2023 when he became the youngest Black professor at the university. His career path, which he described as defined by overcoming significant early childhood challenges, faced recent scrutiny from various sources. Allegations concerning his doctoral research, specifically claims of plagiarism and fabricated evidence, surfaced over the last month.
In a statement released through the Good Law Project, Arday addressed the situation. He noted that the public commentary and persistent speculation became too heavy to manage. While maintaining his innocence regarding the plagiarism accusations, he stated that he reached a point where he could no longer continue in his role given the ongoing environment.
Cambridge confirmed that the inquiry will examine both his academic work and the details of his honorary appointments. The university stated that it intends to ensure a fair process throughout the review. Previously, Arday received support from colleagues who characterized the criticism against him as an unfair campaign, but the discovery of new information prompted the university to move forward with a formal internal investigation.
