Breakthrough Rescue Operation at Trishuli 3A

Rescuers pulled two men alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal on Friday, nine days after catastrophic floods devastated the region. The survivors, Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan, remained trapped underground for over 200 hours following the flash flood that hit the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project on August 26. Emergency teams used satellite imagery and topographic data to locate the tunnel, which was buried under massive amounts of mud and debris.

Sanjay Sah, a 30-year-old mechanical foreman, was in stable condition upon his recovery. He asked rescuers for the date shortly after being brought to the surface. Kabir Maharjan, 45, required intensive care at a military hospital in Kathmandu. Their survival provides a rare point of optimism in a disaster that has claimed more than 1,290 lives in Nepal and 21 in China, with thousands still missing across both nations.

The Technical Challenges of Tunnel Extraction

Removing the two men required unprecedented engineering efforts. Arnold Dix, a disaster-response expert advising the mission, noted that the tunnel was filled with mud and rocks the size of vehicles. Rescuers had to clear debris by hand once heavy machinery reached the site, as the structural integrity of the tunnel was compromised. This method proved difficult because workers had to avoid causing further collapses that might trap additional survivors.

Teams utilized compressors, breakers, and explosives to carve a path through the interior. The process was slow and carried extreme risk to the rescuers themselves. Despite the danger, the successful extraction of Sah and Maharjan validated the rescue methodology developed for these specific subterranean conditions. It was a world-first attempt at this scale.

Future Implications for Himalayan Infrastructure

Authorities now face the grim reality of the remaining missing workers. The Nepal Army reports that 945 individuals are still unaccounted for across 11 different energy projects in the region. While the rescue at Trishuli 3A provided a brief moment of hope, search teams indicated that the probability of finding more survivors in that specific tunnel is low. The focus is shifting toward recovering those who did not survive.

Cross-border safety is also changing. Chinese authorities announced on Thursday the relocation of customs facilities at the Zhangmu Port due to high geological risks. The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure projects built along the Himalayan border. As the water recedes and the search efforts wind down, the focus will turn toward the future of energy development in high-risk seismic and flood-prone zones. Official inquiries into the disaster's scale are expected to continue for months.
