A cargo ship, the M/V LUTUF, is currently under pirate control off the coast of Somalia. The vessel, which is flagged to Cameroon and operated by Polar Movement Shipping, was intercepted near Marraya in the Puntland region earlier this week. Reports indicate the ship was carrying a cargo of Turkish weapons intended for a training facility in Mogadishu, alongside communications and satellite equipment.
The crew consists of ten individuals, including six Indian nationals, one Turkish national, one Georgian, and two Serbian security guards. Sources suggest the pirates responsible for this hijacking are linked to a group involved in a prior vessel seizure in late April.
Following the hijacking, two Turkish-owned ships appeared in the vicinity, supported by aerial surveillance from Turkish helicopters and drones. Observations from the area report that a small boat delivered khat, a local stimulant, to the hijacked vessel on Tuesday. Shortly after that delivery, an airstrike occurred in the area near the Nugaal coast, resulting in the reported deaths of four men and injuries to two others. The status of the vessel, its crew, and the cargo remains uncertain at this time as the situation continues to unfold.
