Meanwhile, the conflict spilled into NATO airspace as a Spanish F-18 fighter jet, currently on a NATO air policing mission, successfully intercepted and shot down a drone that breached Romanian borders. This marks the fourth such incident in Romania this year, highlighting the persistent danger of stray munitions as the war continues along the 634km shared border. The Romanian Defence Ministry continues to monitor the airspace following previous incursions.
Simultaneously, the situation inside Russia escalated as Moscow officials confirmed a large-scale drone incursion from Ukraine. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that over 100 drones were downed by air defense systems, with debris falling across the city and wounding three people. This marks a continuation of Ukraine’s strategy to target industrial and logistical sites deep within Russian territory in response to ongoing bombardment.
United Nations reports indicate that civilian casualties in Ukraine reached their highest levels since 2022 during the month of July. With at least 437 people killed and over 2,600 injured in a single month, the human toll remains heavy as both sides maintain intense, long-range aerial campaigns.
